After paying almost $700 million for the team, though, these guys are bound to look elsewhere for the money they’ll need to renovate the stadium. Part of that equation will be naming rights, something that won’t be new to the leaders of this investment group. John W. Henry is in the middle of selling Pro Player Stadium (formerly Joe Robbie Stadium) and the Florida Marlins—he's been trying to get financing to replace that field since 1998. And Tom Werner comes from the San Diego Padres, where Qualcomm bought the rights to rename Jack Murphy Stadium with an $18 million expansion project.
The sale of the Red Sox is a record-setting deal, and the deal for naming rights should be a stunner, too. But given the condition of the economy (and the state of most of the companies who’ve pitched in for similar naming rights), there probably aren’t many Boston-area companies solvent enough to pony up the bucks. Dunkin’ Donuts, maybe. Sam Adams? Who else?
It looks like the group that won the bidding for the Red Sox are going to renovate Fenway Park rather than build some sort of bigger replica stadium. It’s the oldest, smallest park in Major League Baseball, but not everyone thinks it should be scrapped—the Save Fenway Park! organization is understandably thrilled by this news.
