barkingmoose: It’s beginning to feel a lot like... another NCAA Championship for the University of North Carolina women’s soccer team. Every year at about this time the Lady Tar Heels add to their mystique as one of the most dominant dynasties in any sport, period. Women’s soccer has been a varsity sport in Chapel Hill since 1979, and since then the team has won 71 of 74 postseason games resulting in 16 out of 19 NCAA Championships. This year the defending champs are 24-0 going into the championship game against Santa Clara (22-2).

The landscape of college sports has changed a lot in the last 20 years, but Anson Dorrance’s teams continue to dominate women’s soccer year after year. His players go on to distinguish themselves in international play as well as the WUSA professional league. As UNC hoops great Dean Smith once said, “This is a women’s soccer school. We’re just trying to keep up with them.”

Update: Coach Dorrance told the News & Observer that winning championships doesn’t get any easier the more you do it. A tough Santa Clara team just proved that, defeating UNC 1-0 to win their first-ever national title. These years—listed as “Oops” years down in Chapel Hill— are the exceptions that prove the rule.
