During his last Senate campaign in 1996, Helms defeated his Democratic (and black) challenger Harvey Gantt 52%-46%. Close enough to give some hope for the future, but not enough to save North Carolina (and the rest of the country) from six more years of bigotry, hatred and ignorance.
